Wingspan

Our Mission: Wingspan Ministry models and manifests the gospel call to justice for GLBT persons in our congregation, our church and our world. Wingspan Ministry is a ministry of St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church that offers pastoral care, education, advocacy and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. We are guided by a committee of St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church, and we seek to empower the members of our congregation (and others) to affirm the place of GLBT persons in church and society.

Uganda Project

Our current project (beginning in the spring of 2011) is to support GLBT persons in Uganda by raising awareness about their plight and by raising funds to support the ministry of Bishop Christopher Senyonjo, one of the leading religious advocate for GLBT persons in Uganda. An Anglican Bishop in Uganda from 1974-1998, he now directs St. Paul’s Reconciliation and Equality Centre for LGBTQ/Straight Alliance in Kampala where he oversees a variety of projects that provide services, sanctuary, and safety to GLBT persons.

You can read our news release announcing our Uganda Project here. You can watch a music video of an anthem written by Wingspan member David Weiss in support of GLBT persons in Uganda below.

Additionally, Wingspan will host the bishop during his September 2011 visit to the US. Details are in the September issue of the Spectrum and our news release about the bishop’s visit can be found here.

Finally, we hope you will consider helping us support the bishop’s work. You can make a secure online donation to by clicking on the “Donate” button at the bottom of the St. Paul-Reformation homepage. Then find the “Wingspan Uganda Project” near the bottom of the Donations page and enter any amount of your choice. Or you can mail a check to: Wingspan Ministry – Uganda, 100 N. Oxford Street, St. Paul, MN 55104. Donations are tax deductible. On behalf of the Bishop Christopher and GLBT persons in Uganda, we say THANK YOU.

Marriage Equality

Wingspan is committed to working in collaboration with others in Minnesota to defeat the 2012 constitutional amendment that would enshrine injustice to GLBT persons in our constitutional by defining marriage as being only between one man and one woman. And we are committed over the long term to pursue marriage equality for all couples in committed loving relationships. Watch the Spectrum (church newsletter) or the Wingspan newsletter for details about our plans as they unfold.

Wingspan Logo

The WingsWingspan logopan Logo gives expression to the all-embracing arms of God which welcomes and affirms all people, but especially gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, their families and friends. The flame is a reminder of the light of justice and freedom which continually shines in places of oppression and hopelessness. We know that oppression and hopelessness is a particular experience for GLBT people and we declare a mission whose goal is that one day that oppression will cease and the hopelessness will fade away.
